400 THOUSAND PEOPLE IN TWO UNFORGETTABLE WEEKS

The outcome of Buenos Aires Tango Festival and Dance World Cup 2011 is certainly positive: in total, 400 thousand people attended the shows and activities held at the Centro de Exposiciones, CCC Teatro 25 de Mayo in Villa Urquiza and Teatro de la Ribera in La Boca. “I’m very satisfied because Tango Buenos Aires is growing year after year: comparing number of visitors, number of registered couples for the Dance World Cup; and also shows to be more in tune with today’s tango: for instance, this year, the Panorama section – with the participation of the most influential cultural entrepreneurs and young artists of the current scene – brought to a massive stage the new languages of our music, adding a breath of fresh air to the scene and mixing together new audiences. So that encounter of generations that we look for has occurred, between up-and-coming and established artists. They are the two general objectives that we set for ourselves. Heritage recovery and tango’s expansion into the future. Such is the spirit of the festival, and in this edition it was clearly manifested,” stated with obvious satisfaction Gustavo Mozzi, the artistic director of the world’s greatest tango event.

The concert series ConCiertos Atorrantes (the term “atorrantes” is lunfardo-slang for “lazy bum” or colloquial for “shameless person”) started at the Sanata Bar in Almagro, in 2009, and from then on, it turned into one of the most attractive events in the musical calendar of Buenos Aires offering good tango every week. There, young musicians are able to show their talent and zest for playing tango, as they continue a century-long tradition. Now, today, Thursday, it is time for them to show off on the great stage of the Festival. At 6 p.m., it will be the turn of Trío Boedo-Gallardo-Gómez to take the stage; the Quasimodo Trío (photo) will be on at 7 p.m; and the Orquesta Típica Conciertos Atorrantes will perform at 8.30 p.m: a selection of the best musicians emerging from the concert series.

Today, Wednesday, at 8.30 p.m., there will be a special concert reviving two Buenos Aires passions that define a civic culture: “Tango y turf,” Tango and burros – donkeys – (such is the name for horses in Buenos Aires lunfardo or slang) that run through stories about life, joy, idols and frustrations: “Por una cabeza,” “Leguisamo solo,” “Bajo Belgrano” and other classics of Tango emphasize this relationship as an overarching theme in the 20th-century popular songbook. Several major figures of the sport of kings will get on stage, and a group of singers will perform a turf-related repertoire, with Juan Carlos Godoy and the guitar of Carlos Juarez as the perfect hosts.
